Blog 1- Introductions

Hello Cornerstone students :)
Not too long ago, we sat in the same classroom as you did and were asked to do so many things that seemed confusing (and at times pointless) but ended up helping us out a lot when it comes to understanding our major and how we can make ourselves marketable to employers. This course and this blog will be away for you to ask any questions, gain mentors that share your major, as well as learn more about interdisciplinary ways of thinking. The first blog will be easy; just like any first day activity, we are going to begin by introducing ourselves.

There are four of us in this Capstone group; and here we are…
Hi, my name is Krista Middleton and I was born and raised in the sunshine state! I’m an Interdisciplinary Studies major with focuses in Behavioral & Social Sciences and the Arts, and a minor in Early Childhood Education. Before I chose my major I was jealous of people who knew exactly what they wanted to study, that is until I found that I didn’t have to pick and chose from my many interests. I’m so happy I decided to major in Interdisciplinary Studies because I’ve been able to incorporate all of my passions. Through this degree I found that a career in Music Therapy would be a perfect fit for me. As a music therapist I’ll be able to establish a therapeutic relationship where I’ll use music to help improve their emotional and physical needs. One day I hope to work in a Children’s Hospital helping children and their families by providing coping mechanisms, acceptance, and the happiness and joy that can be found in music!

Hello my name is Ismael Ramos. I graduate this May 2012. My Major is Physical/Healthcare Science and my Minor is Marketing. I am Co-Owner/Manager of a Barbershop, also I am a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CphT). After Graduation I plan to start a career with a financially solid company. Also, I plan on furthering my education by getting my MBA. When discussing my IDS degree my best explanation is it is a degree that allows you to explore many other areas of study which you can combine to your areas of interest. One advantage of this degree would give you the option to combine different areas of study for your future career. Welcome fellow IDS students and good luck on your journey to completing your IDS degree.

My name is Preston Dantoni and I'm a 24 year old senior at UCF. I currently live in Ormond Beach, which is a small beach town about ten minutes north of Daytona. I've spent the past six years of my life traveling, exploring what life has in store for me, and finally finishing a degree. I love sports and I play several instruments. As a result, I've spent the majority of my life playing music. I've grown up playing in church bands and pop rock bands. Music is a large part of who I am. I started of my collegiate career as a meteorology major. I wanted to be a weather man. However, it wasn't long before I changed my mind and began a long and tenuous process of finally landing on a major. That major was Interdisciplinary Studies. I finally decided after 4 years and much hard work that I was meant for a life of medicine. Unfortunately, most of the majors I could take were not quite as tailored as I would have liked, and that's were IDS came in. I've spent two years pursuing an IDS degree and couldn't be happier. It has helped me pursue ever dream in exactly the way I wanted to. My days of searching are over and I'm about to graduate from this great school. I can't wait.

My name is Codyann Catlin. My areas of study are Behavioral and Social Science along with Communication. My minor is Education. Fortunately, thanks to my IDS degree I will also graduate with a minor in Interpersonal and Organizational Communications and Sociology as well. I chose IDS because I am the most indecisive person I know, fortunately I was able to use my inability to make one choice to my advantage and find a degree that made me more versatile. I spent the first 12 years of my life living in the Cayman Islands before my family migrated to Sarasota, Florida. I will be graduating in May and have applied to many jobs in my different fields to work for a year until I am ready to begin graduate school. Currently, I tutor students and nanny for two young boys. I also volunteer at the YMCA and Orlando Regional Medical Center. My mom always said; “if you don’t have money you should give your time and if you don’t have time then you should donate money.” This is why volunteering is so important to me. I have one younger brother who is nineteen years old and goes to FGCU. My family is the most important thing in the world to me. I really enjoy working with people. The best way to get in touch with me is through email of directly through the blog.

Now, it’s your turn to tell us a little bit about yourself. Just a short paragraph explaining your:
• Name, areas of focus and minor.
• Why or how you chose IDS.
• Some interesting facts about you.
• And what you plan to do with your IDS major.

  1. Hello, my name is Lauren Honeycutt. My areas of focus are in Public Relations/ Advertising and Film: Cinema Studies. My minor's are in Film: Cinema Studies and Leadership. I chose IDS due to the simple fact I was not accepted into the Nicholson School of Communication. So I found a back door, a way I could dual major and create a degree that matches all my areas of interest. I found that I am taking the exact same classes I would have taken had I been accepted into the Nicholson School. I was pleased to find out I could bump up my minor in Film to also a major focus of my new degree. Not only was it a new focus but I had already completed the requirements for that area of my degree. Which means I have less classes to take till I graduate! Some interesting facts about me are the following: I have been working in the film department here at UCF as the PR student for "5 Stories". I am the Publicist (PR rep) for Nils Taranger on his film "A Blue Flower". My favorite actor is Hugh Jackman, and he is playing Jean Valjean in my favorite musical "Les Miserables". I do Henna in my sparetime and can be hired to do henna parties! I love to write, and am working on my first full length film of which I am a screen writer/co-director/co-producer. I wrote and produced my first short film last semester "Revelations". I have two Chihuahua's of which I love and adore! The rumors of evil chihuahua's are untrue, they are very loving and affectionate even to strangers! Their names are Nicholas and Genevieve. I am an only child. I plan to take my IDS degree and find a job in advertising or public relations. I would love to work in film and do the advertising such as movie trailers in california. Hopefully I will be able to take my degree and work for a film company such as Paramount Pictures or MGM. I plan on working my way from PR/ADV into the film industry as a Director, Producer and screenwriter.

    1. My name is James Barry I am a Health Sciences and Biology. I chose IDS because it fits best with my job plans (becoming a Physician Assistant.) I also wanted to have other skillsets that will make me more employable by the Government (preferably VA and overseas.) I was a Navy Corpsman organic to the Marine Corps for 5 years as well as a EMT-I in Japan providing medical support to the base housing commmunities. I plan to be a PA to give back to the military community.

    2. James, what does a Physician Assistant do? what did you do in the Navy? My best friend's dad was a Naval Officer while I was growing up and he worked on computers and other technology. Where do you want to work when you graduate?

    3. Hello, welcome aboard Lauren. It sounds like you know exactly what you want to do. I don't know too much about public relations but I have a friend who said she had interned in PR and said it was a great experience. Have you looked into internships yet?

      Delete
    4. James, I have similar majors to you. I own a barbershop and I used to work at a pharmacy for several years, but I wanted to come back to school to get a degree because then my job would be more stable. And thats a very admirable career path. You go this.

    5. @Lauren:
A Physician Assistant has a lot of the same functionality as a Nurse Practitioner. They are considered to be mid-level providers. The rules and regulation regarding their practice varies greatly from state to state. In some we are able to write prescriptions and some we aren't. As the healthcare profession grows and the need for Primary Care Physicians grows it is expected for there to be a much greater need for PA's. Basically a PA will be the guy who does the real work before the doctor comes in and says discharges you.

    6. Welcome Lauren :) seems as though you really do know what you want and these minors and areas of study that you have chosen will definitely help you out. The one I found the most engaging is Leadership. VERY useful.

    7. Thanks guys! I do know what I want out of my majors and I hope to achieve it! I have looked into an internship and am applying by March 1st. I am having trouble writing a recommendation letter for my professor to model hers after and another to sign, any suggestions?

@James I think it is awesome you are becoming a PA. My mom is a nurse so I totally understand your outlook. Hope you enjoy it!

  4. Whitney, Journalism and minor in marketing. I decided to chose IDS because of the Journalism program was pending for me but I plan on applying again next semester. I found out IDS was away for me to get around the Journalism program. I might stay in it if I like it. If I keep my IDS major I still plan to work for a magazine company. After that I would like to branch and have my own magazine. I want to be a magazine editor but now I'm also leaning towards Advertisement because I have a great creative side. Some interesting facts about me is that most people don't know I have over 100 notebooks filled with stories. Another fact is that I'm the baby of 13 children (:. I have 2 nieces and 2 nephews.

    1. 13 children ??? Are you the oldest? 100 notebooks with stories? What type of stories? Yours and Laurens aspirations are very similar, its great that your in this blog together, you could learn something from each other.

    2. Journalism is definitely a great choice for you if you have 100 notebooks of stories. I hope that through IDS and this blog we can really help you!

    3. @Whitney:
I think it is awesome that you aspire to to have your own magazine since one of the primary career paths I am interested in is writing for a magazine. What kind of magazines do you like to read and what type of magazine would you ideally like yours to be? Also, what was it like growing up with that many siblings?

      Delete
    4. Have you thought about public relations? My friend does that and loves it. It can be a lucrative career as well.

    5. whitney, if you ever work for Vogue you should totally hire me to do PR/ADV work for your magazine!haha I hope it all works out for you and you get into the program you desire. 13 children? you never told me this! WOW!!!

    6. Whitney,
That is so awesome that you have 13 sibilings. Do you use your experiences and memories for life in a big family in your stories? My mother is from a family of 8 and to hear all the stories her and her siblings have are always entertaining.

  5. @James I like the fact that you are going to go be a PA in the military. My family is a military family and I love it. It seems like you have had a nice adventures life and still have more to go. I wish you the best.

  6. @Preston Dantoni what type of field will you go in after you graduating seeing you want to do medicine and all?

    1. Hey Whitney,

Thanks for asking. I'm actually planning on attending chiropractic school in July. The school is called Palmer College of Chiropractic and is located in Port Orange, FL. I'm really excited about starting and getting ready to apply. I'm getting married in a month so naturally I'm super busy, but I'll be applying after the wedding and hoping for the best. What type of magazine are you planning on running after school? Is that something you can do from Orlando or will you need to go elsewhere?

  7. @Whitney:
My family really enjoyed the military lifestyle while I was enlisted. What branch of the military? As for adventures...there are still many places to see. I haven't made it to Europe yet (I have my sights set on Spain.) Though another trip to Japan would be nice to spend more time with the wife's family. I just have to keep moving, learning and growing. Thank you for your service as well...it's not only the service member who sacrifices...often the family sacrifices much more. 12 siblings???? after 5 I would start assigning numbers rather than names. I imagine you have many interesting stories to share and hope that you are find much success in your career!

  8. Hey guys, my name is Robbie Errichetti. My areas of focus are Commerce and Communications with a minor in Mass Culture and Collective Behavior. I have bounced around between a mess of different majors and I ended up back where I started, at IDS. I realized that focusing on a singular area of study was not for me since I like so many different things and I do not want to limit myself. I'm all about solving problems by pulling from different knowledge I have and I think this major is perfect for me. In my spare time I love to write. I currently write for KnightNews.com and my favorite thing to write about is food since it is one of my biggest passions. I also work in the UCF library in the circulation department which I really like. Since I was a little kid I have always enjoyed being around books even if I'm not reading them, so its the perfect job for me. When I graduate from college I would like to go on to graduate school and study journalism or communication studies. My ultimate career goals are to either write for a magazine like Bon Appeit or Food and Wine or be a college professor in the communications department of a school.

My friend and former room mate also works for KnightNews.com and loves it! Keeps you very busy though but I think you are on a great path to getting where you want!

    2. Hey Robbie. Thanks for sharing. There are also professors in the Rosen Campus that teach Wine and beer classes. Which is think is awesome.

  10. My name is Shane Stephenson and my focus(s) are in business and the arts. I am minoring in Communication.
I chose I.D.S. because it will benefit me the most in my future career as a Facilities Manager.
I enjoy the outdoors, bicycling, motorcycles (sport bikes); I skateboarded in high school and still do it occasionally. I love and still play basketball & volleyball. I enjoy my family (married with three kids, yes, 3 kids). I’m a return student to better my life and my lifestyle.
I plan to use my IDS major to go into Facilities Management. My background is in construction management and I have five years under my belt (three in residential building and two in commercial). FM will have plenty of variances in it which is why a multi-diciplined major will benefit my future career.

    1. Wow! That is really interesting Shane. Congrats by the way on your 3 kids and wife! I'm sure they are wonderful. I love children. I was a nanny for two boys and soon became the official babysitter of their neighborhood! It sounds like you already have a start on your career path which is great and I hope we can help you transition through IDS.

    2. Shane thanks for sharing man. And keep being motivated, its an admirable quality to come back to school. I did the same thing, because I wanted to better my life and hold a stable career. I'm not married or have an kids though. I will be getting married this summer. Wish me luck !

    3. @Shane:
That is really impressive that you are able to balance school, a family, and I know you work at the Student Union from sitting next to you in class. Has your background in construction made some of the courses you have been taking easier or given you some type of edge?

    4. Hi there I am Commerce also. I am taking some courses I like and I am so excited. I like that I am IDS because I get to explain it to people and they think I am so smart and cool and I am able to handle all this work when it is really not that bad.

  12. My name is Ashleigh Augustine and my focus is Life and Bio medical Sciences and Anthropology with a minor in Humanities. I was a Biology major and decided at the end of my junior year that I was not happy with my major and life plan. I want to teacher middle school or high school science teacher. After graduation I will be going through the process of alternative certification for education and eventually I want to get my Masters in Science Education. By choosing IDS I could maximize the courses and electives that I have taken and broaden my knowledge for a future career as a teacher. I was born and raised in Ormond Beach, Florida. I am really close to my family. I have to two younger brothers. I am a very crafty person. I love to scrapbook and crotchet. I also really enjoy volunteering at my church. I also enjoy traveling. 13. Hello. I'm Sara Smith and my areas of focus are Arts (Film) and Communication with a minor in Entrepreneurship. I chose IDS to assist in the design of a personalized major. Although, I thoroughly enjoy making films, I realize that getting a degree in Film would not be the most efficient path for what I want to do (editing and scheduling).

Traveling is not only a hobby but a greatly valued perk of my work. In the past 6 months I've been all over Florida, Virginia, California, Canada, England, Germany, and Finland.

With a Bachelors degree under my belt, I feel I will be better equipped to tackle my goals and further my education with a Masters in Management in the future.
